Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
